More than 100 kitchens across the city will be whipping up special menus for Culinaria's San Antonio Restaurant Weeks, starting Saturday and lasting through Aug. 24.
Why it matters: The citywide promotion has introduced diners to new eateries with prix fixe menus at reduced prices since Culinaria, a nonprofit dedicated to showcasing the local food scene, launched it in 2010.
- The event helps boost restaurant traffic during a typically slow season, according to Culinaria vice president Ginger Robinson tells Axios.
How it works: Participating restaurants offer special menus for brunch ($25), lunch ($20 or $30) and dinner ($45 or $55). Restaurants like Frida Mexican Restaurant, Meadow, and Renzo's Trattoria and Pizzeria offer all three menus.
- Some restaurants will often offer wine, cocktail or beer options or an additional course.
- Restaurants do not pay to participate, but they donate back to Culinaria on a sliding scale: $2 for lunch and $3-$5 for dinner, depending on the meal price.
- The funds are then funneled back to the local hospitality industry.
Zoom in: Some of San Antonio's most popular restaurants, like Leche de Tigre, Ladino, Bliss, Brasserie Mon Chou Chou and Restaurant Claudine are on the list.
- More casual restaurants like Willie's Grill & Icehouse are also participating.
The bottom line: Restaurant Weeks serves as both a marketing tool and community event, encouraging diners to explore new places and giving restaurants a chance to attract returning customers.
- The biannual event includes a winter edition, which typically takes place in January.
What they're saying: "It's an annual tradition and the perfect way to try out new restaurants, visit your favorites and to schedule time for dining out," Culinaria president Suzanne Taranto-Etheredge said in a statement.
What's next: Start making your reservations. While they aren't required, it's a good idea to set a plan given the event's popularity.
