Mechanicsville family aims for record with 1,601 squirt guns

State of play: Brothers Mark and Kelly Guncheon, along with their wives, spent six hours on Tuesday arranging, numbering and photographing the water guns in Mark's Mechanicsville driveway, Mark tells Axios.

• The collection belonged to their late brother, Paul Guncheon, who started collecting in the 1980s and died in 2024.

• The family wanted to finish what he started.

The final tally: 1,601 squirt guns — roughly 600 more than the current Guinness record, according to Mark.

What they're saying: The guns don't have to be filled with water for the record-attempt, "and for that we are very grateful," Mark tells Axios.

What's next: The Guncheon family is awaiting instructions from Guinness on what it needs to verify their potential record — and the process could take awhile, Mark says.

Fun fact: Richmond is no stranger to quirky world records.

• A Chesterfield woman has held the world record for largest beaver collection since 2020 (1,456 beaver-themed items).
• And next weekend's Richmond Tattoo & Arts Convention was recognized last year as the world's longest-running tattoo convention (38 years and counting after next weekend).
