Massanutten Resort just opened what it says is the state's first — and only — alpine coaster.
Why it matters: The coaster is a ride through the Shenandoah Valley and just two hours from Richmond.
State of play: Massanutten's Mountain Mayhem is part of the resort's Family Adventure Park and open year-round.
- The six-minute ride runs 3,380 feet — more than half of which is downhill — and includes two full 360-degree spirals.
- It tops out at around 25 mph, which is slower than, say, Busch Gardens' 67 mph Alpengeist coaster, but at Massanutten, the rider gets to control their speed.
- Riders can opt for a single toboggan or a two-seater.
If you go: Mountain Mayhem is open daily and to riders aged 4 or older. Kids 11 and under must ride with someone 13 or older.
- A la carte tickets are $18; $24 for a kid and an adult.
