Richmond lands nonstop Cancún flights with Breeze

State of play: The RIC-CUN nonstop flights mark the first time in more than a decade that Richmonders can fly directly into Mexico, the Richmond airport said Tuesday when announcing the route.

• The Breeze flights will start Jan. 8 and run on Mondays and Fridays in winter and spring, per the airport.
• The flight addition is in celebration of Breeze's fifth anniversary at RIC (and maybe helps soften the blow of the Spirit shutdown last weekend).

Zoom in: Breeze is offering low introductory fares for a limited time starting at $167 each way, per an Axios review of its site.

• The route will get travelers from Richmond to Mexico's white sand beaches in three hours, 45 minutes.

Fun fact: Richmond added its first international flights in more than a decade last year to Bermuda, then the airline paused the service after about six months.

Yes, but: Bermuda's weather is basically the same as the Outer Banks, not the tropical paradise travelers can find in Cancun.
