Nonstop flights from Richmond to Bermuda will start this summer — making them the first international flights out of Richmond International Airport in more than a decade.
Why it matters: The route will get locals from Eastern Henrico to an island near the Caribbean in just over two hours.
The big picture: Twice weekly nonstop service from RIC to Hamilton, Bermuda (the island's capital) starts June 7, BermudaAir and RIC announced Thursday.
- The flights will run on Wednesdays and Saturdays, leaving Richmond around 6:30pm with return flights departing around 3:30pm.
- Round-trip tickets for the June 7 flight start at $528, per an Axios review.
Worth noting: The flying time there clocks in at 2 hours and 15 minutes, roughly half the time it takes to get from Richmond to Bermuda now since there's no layover with this nonstop service.
Fun facts: Bermuda is a British territory known for its pink beaches, coral reefs and shipwrecks.
- It is also closer to Hatteras in the Outer Banks than any other land mass in the Atlantic.
Catch up quick: International flights haven't run out of Richmond since 2013, when AirCanada stopped its Richmond to Toronto service, Richmond airport spokesperson Troy Bell tells Axios.
- RIC has been working since at least 2022 to upgrade the airport's customs area and consolidate its TSA checkpoints to allow for the return of international flights.
- The customs upgrades were completed in August, The airport got a $2.25 million federal grant toward its TSA consolidation in November.
What's next: The flight to Bermuda is hopefully the first of more direct destinations out of Richmond.
- In 2022, Bell told Axios that flights between Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean would likely be the first International routes out of Richmond, with ones to Europe hopefully added one day.
