Hammie Mae's comeback takes flight at Richmond airport

Catch up quick: Earlier this year, when the Richmond zoo insisted on calling its baby pygmy the winning name — Poppy — Richmond artist Doug Orleski (aka RVA Coffee Stain) led a delightful charge decrying the pick.

• Orleski was passionately Team Hammie Mae, contrary to the 100,000-plus people the zoo said picked Poppy.
• It seemed Hammie Mae was dead forever ... until now.
• Hummie Mae was one of 126 names locals suggested in the airport's naming contest for its sculpted hummingbirds, and ultimately took one of the three winning spots, RIC tells Axios.

Fun fact: Orleski didn't suggest the name.

What they're saying: "The people have spoken. Supporters of the name Hammie Mae and variations run deep through the city," Orleski tells Axios.

• The other two birds will be called Henry and Hollywood, for Patrick Henry Hollywood Cemetery.
