The Richmond airport might be building a 24-foot-tall sculpture of a Virginia dogwood, the state's official flower and tree, between the North and South garages, reports the Henrico Citizen.
Why it matters: It'll be hard to miss.
Zoom in: Just one of its curling leaves, pictured above, is estimated to be six feet long, per the airport commission's presentation in a committee meeting this week.
- But the full commission has to vote whether to approve the project at its Tuesday meeting first.
What we're watching: Richmond airport officials also have early plans to create a massive, lit-up entry sign shaped like Virginia with an airplane figurine attached to it.
- The design is conceptual and "very likely to change" before the airport commission considers it for final approval, airport spokesperson Troy Bell told Axios.
- The Federal Aviation Administration also has to determine whether the design would significantly impact navigation.
- The FAA could make its state sign decision as early as September.
