2025 Thanksgiving cost drops — but at a price

The average "classic holiday feast" for 10 people will run $55.18 this Thanksgiving, per the American Farm Bureau Federation's annual survey.
Why it matters: Per usual, the farm bureau estimates a meager feast with few leftovers, no green bean casserole — and now, no mashed potatoes.
How it works: The group's calculation is based on a basket of traditional Thanksgiving favorites, including turkey, sweet potatoes, stuffing and more using prices gathered by volunteer shoppers.
Yes, but: AFBF's 10-person "feast" estimates assume:
- 1 dozen dinner rolls. For 10 people.
- 1 pound of frozen peas, which amounts to about half a typical serving.
- About a half a cup of stuffing per person.
- In lieu of green bean casserole, obviously a feast staple, the farm bureau has Americans loading up on a 1-pound veggie tray comprised exclusively of raw carrots and celery.
The good news: Two nine-inch pies and a 16-pound turkey, AFBF estimates, should feed 10 people just fine ... just as long as no one wants a hearty serving, seconds or leftovers.
- Plus, the average price of a 16-pound frozen bird is $21.50 this year, down over 16% from last Thanksgiving, per AFBF. That's largely because retailers are eating into their margins to keep prices down at the grocery store, Axios' Kelly Tyko reports.
If you're looking for a more realistic Turkey Day feast estimate — one that includes mashed potatoes and green bean casserole — a Deloitte survey found it'll cost you $76.50. For eight people.
