Carytown's welcome sign is gone — for now

Driving the news: The sign's maker, Wellcraft MFG, removed it early Thursday to repair a "recurring transformer issue" and for annual maintenance, says Kelley Banks, Carytown Merchants Association's city liaison.

• Banks tells Axios that this will help fix the illumination problems the sign has had this past year.
• The first two letters went out last November, and in May, the "TOWN" went dark.
• Then last month, the sign read "RYTOWN" once again.

Flashback: The signage, over a decade in the making, first went up last October and hung about 25 feet in the air over Cary Street by Burtons Grill & Bar.

What we're watching: The repair timeline was unclear as of Thursday, and could range from a few weeks to more than a month.

• But Banks says the goal is for it to be back up by Small Business Saturday, two days after Thanksgiving.
