Virginians spent $30M on medical cannabis in 2 months

By the numbers: In July and August, VCCA's system, Metrc, logged:

🪴 17,786 cannabis plants harvested.

💰 $29,942,138 in sales.

🏷️ 256,432 transactions.

Zoom in: When it comes to the state's medical weed patients, it seems they prefer to smoke their medicine.

🚬 47% of sales were for flower / buds.

🪄 32% — concentrates (vapes, tinctures).

🍬 15% — edibles.

💨 5% — shake trim.

Context: Public data around the state's young medical cannabis market has been sparse.

• The General Assembly created the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority in 2021 and moved regulatory oversight of the program from the Virginia Board of Pharmacy to the CCA in 2023.
• That same year, the Board of Pharmacy reported that Virginia had just 55,000 patients using the program — far less than the 200,000 patients medical operators predicted.

What's next: A public dashboard tracking the medical program is in the works, CCA noted.
