Hundreds of Henrico County students could be reassigned to a new school as early as next year under a redistricting proposal officials are weighing.
Why it matters: The first of three town halls for residents to share feedback is Thursday night.
The big picture: Henrico is reviewing boundary changes at 16 schools to address potential overcrowding and to ensure more elementary and middle school students stay together through high school.
- The district estimates its 50,000-student population will increase by around 1.9% by 2028.
- To prepare, the district is proposing boundary adjustments for neighborhoods spanning five elementary schools, five middle schools and six high schools.
Elementary school changes

- 72 students from Ridge Elementary would move to the new Jackson Davis Elementary, which opens next school year.
- 9 Maybeury Elementary students ➡️ Carver.
Middle school changes

- 330 Tuckahoe Middle students ➡️ the bigger Quioccasin, which is undergoing an expansion project that should wrap for the 2027–28 school year.
- 452 Quioccasin students ➡️ Tuckahoe
- 37 Quioccasin students ➡️ Pocahontas
- 210 Pocahontas students ➡️ Quioccasin
- 76 Holman students ➡️ Hungary Creek
High school changes

- 129 students from Freeman (which is at 104% capacity) ➡️ Godwin
- 280 Tucker students ➡️ Hermitage
- 19 Tucker students ➡️ Godwin
- 67 Highland Springs students ➡️ Henrico High
- 171 Hermitage students ➡️ Henrico
Between the lines: If a school boundary change is adopted, rising 5th, 8th, 11th and 12th graders will likely have the option to stay at their current school, per the county.
What's ahead: The school board won't finalize any plans until December. It's encouraging residents to share their feedback online, at upcoming school board meetings or during one of its town halls:
- Thursday, Sept. 18, 7–9pm at J.R. Tucker High School
- Tuesday, Sept. 30, 6:30–8:30pm at Highland Springs High School
- Tuesday, Oct. 7, 6:30–8:30pm at ACE Center at Hermitage
