Virginia diners rankslightly above average when it comes to tipping at restaurants, according to new data from restaurant tech firm Toast.
Why it matters: Tips remain an essential part of income for many restaurant workers.
By the numbers: Nationwide, average tips at both full and quick-service restaurants were 18.8%.
Virginians ponied up 19.3%, on average.
That ranks Virginia at 32nd in the nation for the best tipping, which is nothing to brag about.
Yes, but: Virginians average tip of 19.3% is up slightly from our the 19.2% average in 2022, while the national average tip has plummeted from 19.7% that same year.
Zoom out: Topping the tipping charts are Delaware, West Virginia and New Hampshire — each averaging nearly 21% tips or more.
Caveat: The report is based on data from restaurants using Toast, and cash tips aren't included in the tally.
The bottom line: When it comes to taking care of your servers, Virginians may still have some work to do. At the very least, we shouldn't allow ourselves to be outranked by West Virginia.
