Virginia reports measles case at Dulles Airport

Threat level: People who are unvaccinated or immunocompromised are most at risk of contracting measles — a highly contagious, airborne disease that can kill you.

• Nearly every unvaccinated person who comes into contact with someone who has measles will likely become infected, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Yes, but: Receiving two doses of the measles vaccine is considered highly effective at preventing the disease for life.

• So if you're already vaccinated, Virginia Department of Health officials say there's no need to worry.

By the numbers: About 94% of kindergarteners in Virginia were vaccinated against measles last school year, per the CDC.

• 95% is considered the ideal percentage for preventing outbreaks.

What to know: The symptoms include a fever greater than 101 degrees, a runny nose, a "barky" cough, red or bloodshot eyes and tiredness.

• Symptoms usually start a week or two after being exposed, per VDH, and escalate to a rash that starts on your face and spreads.

What to do: If you're unvaccinated and think you were exposed at Dulles, watch for symptoms until March 26.

• If experiencing symptoms: Isolate, call a health care provider and tell them to call VDH.

Between the lines: This isn't the first time VDH has reported a measles case in recent years.

• There were people who traveled through Dulles and Reagan National last January who also had it.
• Virginia had fewer than 10 measles cases last year, per CDC data.
