The hottest beverage trend right now is completely booze-free and adored by the Latter-day Saint community: dirty soda.
Why it matters: You can try it for yourself at a handful of places in Richmond.
For the uninitiated: Dirty soda is a drink mixed with cream, syrups and other flavorings.
- It's been around since at least 2010 but is surging in popularity right now thanks to TikTok and the Hulu reality series "The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives."
- The three big players in dirty soda chains — Swig, Sodalicious and Fiiz — are all based in Utah and have been rapidly storming their way eastward with new locations (though none have landed in Virginia yet).
Zoom in: Richmond was set to get its first dedicated dirty soda shop with Mixed Sodas, which was in the works in Short Pump and supposed to open earlier this year.
Yes, but: The shop never opened, its socials have been dormant since March and no one responded to our requests for an update.
But, but, but: We still found a few places in town where you can get your dirty soda fix and live your best RVA version of "The Secret Lives."
- Uptown Alley, the bowling alley off Hull and 288 in Chesterfield, has a dedicated dirty soda menu that's available whenever they're open.
- 7Brew, the drive-thru coffee shop that opened its first local location in Midlothian earlier this year, calls its version of dirty sodas "Fizz" (just make sure to add the cream).
- Sippin Spot, an Amelia-based mobile cart that posts up around town, has two on its holiday menu.
- Sonic, and its three Richmond-area locations, has a Dirty Dr. Pepper (that's coconut, cream and lime mixed in with a Dr. P).
- If you want to try out a specialty shop and don't mind a drive, try Sippin' Pop in Fredericksburg or Fizz Fusion on 460 in Windsor, about an hour and a half east of Richmond.
- Or, make your own using the ingredients on hand at any Wawa, Sheetz or 7-Eleven.
