Study: Richmonders need to make $30 an hour to afford a 1-bedroom

State of play: Clever set out to see how much residents in the 50 largest U.S. housing markets would need to make to afford rent on a typical fair-market one-bedroom — and where one could swing it making minimum wage.

What they found: In none of the nation's largest cities can a minimum wage worker afford a one-bedroom, nor can they do it using the 30% of income affordability threshold.

• Buffalo, New York is the only city that comes even close due to the state's $15 minimum wage and the city's lower average rent.
• Yes, but: Even there, a minimum wage worker would still be short around $200 a month, and then they'd also have to live in Buffalo.

By the numbers: A typical one-bedroom in Richmond is $1,545 a month, which would require one to make at least $29.71 an hour, or just over $61,000 a year, to swing it, Clever found.

• A full-time worker making Virginia's $12 an-hour minimum wage could afford $624 a month in rent.

The bottom line: The rent is still too damn high.
