Virginia voters have cast their ballots in the presidential election and scores of other contests.
Why it matters: Polling suggests a close race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Trump, yet the most interesting decisions might come in Richmond's local races.
The big picture: All 11 U.S. House seats in Virginia are up for grabs, but only three races include metro Richmond.
- Incumbent and Democrat Rep. Jennifer McClellan kept her seat in Congress, which represents the Richmond area, defeating Republican Bill Moher, according to the AP.
- The Senate has a much-publicized race between Trump-endorsed Hung Cao and Sen. Tim Kaine, a Richmonder seeking his third Senate term who is expected to win.
Between the lines: Virginia voters overwhelmingly said "yes" to amending the state constitution to expand property tax exemptions to include surviving spouses of soldiers who died in the line of duty.
- Currently, the law only covers surviving spouses of soldiers killed in action.
- And over 81% of Petersburg voters decided to allow a casino to be built on a 92.5-acre development off I-95.
Zoom in: Then there's the race for Richmond's next mayor, which has no incumbent and five candidates.
- A mayoral candidate has to win five of the nine City Council districts to be elected.
- If no one does, the top two candidates head to a runoff election in December.
Plus, seven of the nine City Council districts could have a new representative next year.
- That includes the 6th District, which has been embroiled in controversy after one candidate, Tavares Floyd, has been accused of lying about his campaign donors, being a lawyer, and being related to George Floyd.
- Five of nine races for school board are contested, including the 8th, where candidate E.J. Jafari has tried to disqualify opponent P.H. "Cruz" Sherman from the ballot.
