Richmond's newest besties are a duck and a former cockfighting rooster

Zoom in: Rather than put the animals down, RACC decided to take a chance on two of the "handleable" birds out of 11 in their care.

• They worked with a trusted foster farm to take them in, slowly integrating the fowl with the rest of the animals while standing ready to take them back.
• The meet went incredibly well with both roosters getting along swimmingly with the rest of the birds. One now even "has a duck as a bestie," RACC said.

What they're saying: "This one was a win; and in a world where wins are hard to come by — we are relishing this outcome," RACC wrote in its Tuesday post.

The bottom line: It's all in a day's work for Richmond's city shelter, which in the last year(ish) has rescued a mama sheep and lamb, a boa constrictor, a family of baby ducklings, "extra special busted goats" and the world's heaviest cat.
