Seth Jarvis is back, and Canes have another star on the way

Catch up quick: Jarvis had offseason shoulder surgery that sidelined him until last week. The News & Observer wrote that his "absence has been felt."

• Jarvis scored a flashy goal and recorded two assists in his first two games back.

The latest: Another young Canes player will soon be making his season debut — Alexander Nikishin, who signed a contract Sunday.

• Trade rumors swirled as Nikishin missed training camp and Carolina's first 13 games. Last season, he was one of the best rookies in the league.
• The Athletic reported he requested a trade and sought $8 million a year. Nikishin wound up signing a one-year deal with the Canes worth $3 million.

What they're saying: Players told reporters Monday they're pleased Nikishin is returning.

• "We all understand [the business] part of it. Wasn't the easiest negotiations by any means to say the least, but from our perspective, we're happy to have him back," Sebastian Aho said.
• Head coach Rod Brind'Amour told reporters that players "hire agents to tell them what to do. Sometimes it's good advice. Sometimes, not so good."

State of play: The Canes lead the NHL standings. Much of their Stanley Cup-winning roster remains intact.

What's next: Lenovo Center will host three Canes games this week.

• First up — the second-place Boston Bruins at 8pm Tuesday on ESPN.
• Then the Hurricanes play the Columbus Blue Jackets at 7pm Thursday and the Winnipeg Jets at 1pm Sunday.
