Downtown Durham could add even more apartments near Geer Street

Driving the news: Four Points, a development firm based in the Washington, D.C., area, has submitted two apartment building plans with the city of Durham that would add 262 apartments to the property adjacent to Geerhouse on Foster Street.

Zoom in: The plans call for two separate buildings, one at 618 Foster St. that would have 84 apartments and another at 715 Rigsbee Ave. with 178 apartments.

• The buildings would each be seven stories tall and connected by a parking deck.
• The project would also include a small amount of space for ground floor retail. The first phase of Geerhouse includes Oscar Diaz's restaurant Tataco, the coffee shop Nectar, the Nanny Goat Market and Uwa Sushi.
• Notably, Geerhouse was built around existing institutions like Geer Street Garden and Motorco Music Hall.

State of play: Four Points has been acquiring properties along Foster and Rigsbee since 2019. The company's original plan was for an 18-story tower to be built in the second phase of construction.

• These new plans replace that vision, though the company still needs to secure financing to move ahead with the project, it told the Triangle Business Journal.
• The Rheu Co. sewing studio is among the existing businesses on land included in Geerhouse's second phase.
