The eight largest publicly traded companies headquartered in the Triangle range from clinical research giants and a fast-growing bank to an auto parts dealer and a construction materials company.
Why it matters: Local corporations are major employers that shape the Research Triangle's growth and identity. They also play an outsized role in supporting charitable causes.
- The following are the largest locally headquartered companies, sorted by their spot on the 2025 Fortune 1000 list. We include their most recent annual revenue and total employee headcount, as reported in Fortune.
Between the lines: The region is also home to many privately held corporations with significant revenue, including SAS Institute and Epic Games. But those companies don't report their exact financials.
- However, if SAS's self-reported number of sales of more than $3 billion in 2024 were included, it would rank No. 7 on this list.
- And if the list were expanded to include the Fortune Global 500, Lenovo would be on top, as the company, which claims dual headquarters in Beijing and Morrisville, reported revenues of $69 billion.
1. IQVIA: $15.4 billion
- The Durham-based company, formerly called Quintiles, produces clinical research and health information tech that gets used by pharmaceutical companies worldwide. IQVIA employs around 88,000 people globally.
- IQVIA ranked No. 282 on Fortune's list. The company is currently in the process of reducing its office footprint in the region, and the financial services firm Aspida will take over its tower on Page Road in Durham, the Triangle Business Journal reported.
2. First Citizens BancShares: $14.8 billion
- The bank, founded in Johnston County in 1889, has grown rapidly this decade through acquisitions, most notably of the failing Silicon Valley Bank two years ago, to become the nation's 16th largest bank. It's now headquartered in Raleigh's North Hills area and employs 17,333 worldwide.
- First Citizens ranked No. 293 on the Fortune list.
3. Labcorp Holdings: $13.0 billion
- Labcorp is headquartered in Burlington, just west of the Triangle, but has offices in the area. Its technicians perform over 600 million diagnostic lab tests globally each year, employing around 65,450 people worldwide. Labcorp came in at No. 328.
4. Advance Auto Parts: $10.9 billion
- After selling car parts for nearly a century, Advance now has around 48,000 workers nationwide and 4,200 stores. The company's headquarters is in North Hills.
- The company, which came in at No. 389, hired a new CEO in 2023 as part of an effort to reverse a decline in sales growth and battle increased competition in the auto parts space.
5. Martin Marietta Materials: $6.5 billion
- Headquartered in Raleigh, Martin Marietta is a major supplier of heavy construction materials used in projects like new roads and highways and the foundations of buildings.
- Martin Marietta, ranked No. 547 on the list and has 9,400 employees nationwide.
6. Cornerstone Building Brands: $5.3 billion
- The Cary-based company, which makes windows, siding and other key building materials, previously was a public company but is now one of the largest privately held companies in the state. It was formed out of the merger of Ply Gem and NCI Building Solutions.
- The company came in at No. 636 and has 18,800 employees worldwide. Earlier this year, its CEO Rose Lee resigned after reporting large financial losses in 2024.
7. Vontier: $3.0 billion
