Epic Games rezoning for Cary Towne Center withdrawn

The Town of Cary has withdrawn Epic Games' rezoning application for the old Cary Towne Center mall due to "inactivity."

Why it matters: Epic Games bought the now defunct mall for $95 million in 2021, with plans to transform the property into a massive headquarters for the video game maker.

But over the past three years, those plans have sat in limbo.

Driving the news: Epic Games, based in Cary, confirmed to Axios that the plans had been withdrawn from the town, but a spokesperson added it had no updates on its plans for the property to share. The Triangle Business Journal first reported the plans had been withdrawn.

Between the lines: Epic has declined to comment on its plans for the property since an initial rezoning hearing with the town was met with some concern from council members.

But since Epic bought the mall, remote work has continued to be popular among tech workers. The company also had a large round of layoffs in 2023.
