The new library under construction in Carrboro now has a name: The Drakeford Library Complex.
Why it matters: The property's name honors Robert "Bob" Drakeford, who made history as Carrboro's first Black mayor. He was elected in 1977 and served until 1983.
Driving the news: The Orange County Board of County Commissioners and Carrboro Town Council approved the building name in separate recent meetings.
Context: Along with the Orange County Southern Branch Library, the $42 million, three-story development will also house Carrboro Recreation, Parks and Cultural Resources; Orange County Skills Development Center; WCOM Radio; a teen center; and performance/multipurpose uses.
It'll have a free parking deck with 171 vehicle parking spaces and 70 bike parking spots.
The building is at 203 S. Greensboro St., next to Open Eye Cafe.
What's next: The complex will open in early 2025, a county spokesperson tells Axios.
