Brittney Griner gets back personal items from her time in Russia

Catch up quick: Griner, who played for the Russian Premier League during the WNBA offseason, was arrested in February 2022 after Russian authorities found two vape cartridges with traces of doctor-prescribed cannabis oil in her luggage while going through customs at a Moscow-area airport.

• She was sentenced to nine years in prison and incarcerated for 10 months before being released in a prisoner swap for a notorious Russian arms dealer.

The latest: The video, posted to YouTube on Feb. 1, provides a snapshot of her Russian experience and the trauma that came with it. Items included:

• A letter that her wife hid in her backpack before she was detained that talked about starting a family after she got back to the U.S. ("That got me. That one got me," Griner said, fighting tears);
• Her wedding ring;
• An X-box, Apple Watch and multiple laptops, including one she said was investigated by Russian officials ("Ain't nothing but Anime, cartoons, music, more Anime, pictures of my dogs," Griner laughed);

• A strand of beads crafted from crushed paper, toothpaste and tea bag strings, gifted to her by the incarcerated boyfriend of her detention center roommate.
