Makutu's Island offers families a reprieve from the Phoenix heat

State of literal play: Makutu's centers around a large, artificial treehouse structure with various play sections, most with intricate (if not dizzying) slides.

• The space requires lots of climbing — a great way to tire out little ones.
• There's also a toddler section, an arcade, a cafeteria and a "Frog Dropper" — the ride your kid will either love or have a meltdown on.

The intrigue: Upon entering, families have to take a photo (on their own phone) so that no child leaves the building with anyone other than the adult they came with.

• Kids can't wander out — nobody can leave without an employee opening a small gate — which gives a sense of safety most play gyms don't offer.
• At $22 a kid (plus $3.50 for grip socks since they don't allow footwear from other places), the peace of mind is well worth it.
