Mayo Clinic to invest $1.9B in Phoenix expansion

Mayo Clinic will invest nearly $2 billion to expand its north Phoenix campus, the hospital announced Monday.

Why it matters: Mayo Clinic is consistently ranked among the nation's top hospital systems and has delivered innovative health care and high-wage jobs to the Valley since its arrival to Arizona about 30 years ago.

Zoom in: The 1.2 million-square-foot expansion represents the hospital's largest Arizona investment and will include:

48 new patient beds;
A five-floor expansion of the Mayo Clinic Specialty Building;
11 new operating rooms;
3,500 additional employees.

What they're saying: "Through this work, we are physically and digitally transforming healthcare and blurring the lines between inpatient and outpatient care ... to serve as a blueprint for the world," Mayo Clinic president and CEO Gianrico Farrugia said in a statement.
