Philly high school polo player Jack Forti didn't know he was putting himself at risk every time he picked up a 40-pound dumbbell — until a heart screening two years ago revealed a condition that made heavy lifting dangerous.

Why it matters: Sudden cardiac arrest claims about 10,000 young lives across the U.S. each year.

Driving the news: Simon's Heart is hoping to recruit hundreds of Philly students for next month's CPR Jukebox Marathon, an overnight fundraiser aiming to raise $200,000 for heart screenings and defibrillators at more Philly rec and community centers.

Student teams will take turns performing chest compressions on red kickballs for 12 hours straight, learning a potentially lifesaving skill in a carnival-like atmosphere with food trucks to enjoy and masseuses on hand for participants who get sore.

Zoom in: Sudden cardiac arrest has impacted several high-profile athletes, including LeBron James' son Bronny and Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin.

USC's training staff performed lifesaving chest compressions and used a defibrillator to stabilize Bronny until he could be treated at a hospital.

After surviving the ordeal, he was drafted by the Lakers, where he and his dad became the first father-son duo to play together in an NBA game.

How it works: Teams are curating playlists featuring songs between 100 and 120 beats per minute, while participants take turns performing chest compressions synced to the music before tapping in a teammate for the next round.

The rhythm helps students develop the "muscle memory" they'll need to perform chest compressions in a life-or-death situation, Jamie Abramson, Simon's Heart program director, tells Axios.

What they're saying: "We're hoping that in an emergency, they would step in and think, 'My song is "I Just Might" by Bruno Mars,'" Abramson says. "So if I just start singing that in my head, I know I'm doing the right beats."

By the numbers: The Conshohocken-based group has conducted about 20,000 heart screenings over the last two decades, detecting heart abnormalities in about 300 cases.

Some required immediate medical attention, while others were more manageable.

Flashback: Forti, a senior at La Salle College High School, discovered he has mitral valve regurgitation — a condition that causes blood to leak backward through the heart's mitral valve — during a 2024 heart screening that his sister helped organize through Simon's Heart.

Forti tells Axios his case is relatively minor and managed through annual checkups and doctor-ordered restrictions: no heavy lifting or CrossFit-style workouts that could put unnecessary strain on his heart.

One of Forti's family friends wasn't as fortunate: She died in 2022 from undiagnosed long QT syndrome, which can cause life-threatening heart rhythms, during her freshman year of college.

The bottom line: Forti says she'll be on his mind during the event.

"I'm just super grateful for Simon's Heart for detecting this because otherwise I never would have known it existed," he says.

If you go: High school students can sign up here to take part in the Nov. 21 marathon at the Philadelphia Union's practice facility in Chester.

News

Why it matters: Garage Beer has chosen one lucky Philly couple to say "I do" at an Eagles tailgate later this month — but the Birds' dismal start is really testing the "for better or worse" part of the vows.

Driving the news: Garage Beer tells Axios it's keeping the couple's identity a mystery for now, but will reveal it in the "coming days" ahead of their big day on Oct. 26, when the Eagles host division rivals Dallas.

Steven Singer Jewelers is giving the couple a $2,000 gift card for their rings, plus they're receiving a honeymoon experience from Ocean Casino Resort, and a second trip in 2027.

Zoom in: Grillmaster Matt Groark is firing up the grills for Eagles fans who will bear witness to the nuptials outside the South Philly sports complex.

Delco Donny and the Philly Pops will ensure the hits keep on coming — and not just on the field.

Garage Beer has lined up a star-studded celebrity guest list that includes former Eagles defensive tackle Beau Allen and other surprise guests.

💭 Isaac's thought bubble: The groom has already popped the biggest question.

But we're wondering whether Garage Beer co-owners Jason and Travis Kelce might make a cameo or officiate the ceremony?

What they're saying: Garage Beer founder Andy Sauer says the idea for a tailgate-inspired wedding sprouted up after the company started randomly receiving "tons of wedding invites every month."

"Philly has always been an incredible supporter of Garage Beer. We've shot commercials here, had red carpet premieres, and had some amazing times at Eagles tailgates. We are excited to bring people together, in a very Garage Beer way."

What's ahead: The beer company says the wedding is just the start of a packed slate of events that includes next month's limited release of beer packs designed by local artist Jordan Spector.

Plus: Garage Beer is hosting a Sip & Shop with Spector at Jawn Supply in West Chester on Oct. 25, featuring limited-edition hats and shirts.

Philadelphians looking to channel their inner Jack Sparrow can embark on a treasure hunt for rare coins and currency.

Why it matters: Stack's Bowers Galleries is giving away $40,000 in prizes as part of a nationwide scavenger hunt that kicked off earlier this month.

Driving the news: The auction house is hiding certificates redeemable for collectible coins and currency at five of Philly's historic sites.

The first clue will be unveiled Tuesday at 5:30pm on the auction house's social media pages, with subsequent clues revealed daily at the same time.

New this year: Get ahead of those lollygaggers but signing up here for early access to the clues.

How it works: Participants must crack codes and solve riddles tied to Philly's history to track down the hidden certificates.

Prizes include a 2011 five-coin set of American Silver Eagles, a 1934 $500 bill and the grand prize — a Saint-Gaudens $20 Gold Double Eagle worth about $3,500.

Zoom out: Stack's Bowers — which has a Center City storefront — has already held treasure hunts in Miami this month, with others planned for San Francisco from Oct. 20 to Oct. 24 and Boston from Oct. 27 to Oct. 31.

Editor's note: This story has been corrected to show Philadelphia's first clue drops at 5:30pm and that the other 2026 treasure hunts are in Miami, San Francisco and Boston.

History

Bad things happen to good teams, and sometimes those bad things are named Nick Sirianni.

Why it matters: Back-to-back late-game blunders have the Eagles head coach on the hot seat again, just five weeks into the season.

State of play: Around this time last year, Sirianni was almost being fitted for a gold Hall of Fame jacket.

The Eagles were still basking in the glow of the franchise's second Super Bowl win, and Sirianni had signed a five-year contract extension earlier that year.

He was even being mentioned as one of the Eagles' all-time great coaches, rivaling Andy Reid, the Birds' winningest head coach.

The big picture: After three straight losses — two in heartbreaking fashion — the Birds are no longer the Kelly green envy of the league.

Sirianni is fending off a mob of disillusioned fans and pundits who want to see him become the first NFL coach fired this season.

Catch up quick: Sirianni has had back-to-back weeks of poor game management.

He blamed himself for the Birds' latest London meltdown — a late-game kickoff return that set up the Jaguars' walk-off field goal as time expired.

Instead of kicking the ball into the end zone for a touchback, the Eagles kept the kickoff in play, giving Jacksonville an opportunity for a big return — despite Josh Cameron's 90-yard return of the opening kickoff that was called back because of a penalty.

Flashback: The pain was intensified for Eagles fans after watching the Rams overcome a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit the week before.

Sirianni decided to go for it on fourth down near the goal line instead of kicking a field goal that would've put the Birds up 13 with under eight minutes left.

What they're saying: Some Axios Philly readers want Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie to hand Sirianni his walking papers, while others think it's too early in the season to cut bait with a head coach who has won nearly 70% of the regular-season games he's coached.

"I think Sirianni has worn out his welcome, but it's ridiculous to put that on himself," Lucas Q. says. "His team should be able to cover a kick."

"Playoffs every year, Great culture guy. Yes, he made a mistake on Sunday. No one is perfect," Matthew H. writes. "I think we will win the division. I hope he stays for a long time."

Yes, but: Reader David B. says it's time to "boot" not-so-slick Nick.

Reality check: Pack away the pitchforks and torches for a few more weeks, Eagles Nation — unless they're part of your Halloween costumes.

Matthew H. has a good point: The NFC East-leading Giants are without starting quarterback Jaxson Dart for the rest of the season, and have earned the nickname "Code Blue" because they're barely scratching out wins.

But just as the Giants are unlikely to keep scratching out wins, the Eagles are unlikely to keep finding new ways to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

The bottom line: If you need any more solace, just remember: How about dem 2-3 Cowboys?

The "Evict Nick" bandwagon is gaining steam
