I'm not a big drinker, but Axios Philly readers really got me in the spirit.
Why it matters: We had the club going up on a Tuesday during our first-ever Axios Social Club earlier this month.
By the numbers: More than 1,500 people, including about two dozen in Philly, broke bread and sipped cocktails at our events across more than 30 cities.
Zoom in: Our truly devoted Axios Philly aficionados even showed out for co-author Mike D'Onofrio and me during our Fishtown afterparty at R&D Cocktail Bar.
- With a Philly-style menu curated for the occasion, I had one too many Hand of God cocktails at the first stop, and then a few of us migrated over to the Fishtown Tavern for a nightcap.
🍷 1 cool thing: A little deception turned into a miracle reception for this Birds-writing crew.
- We have to give a huge shoutout to the reader who recommended the event to his single sister, who drove all the way from Princeton, looking for a love connection.
- Instead, she found married Mike and too-heartbroken-to-mingle Isaac sitting at a candlelit table discussing politics with a 70-something lawyer who had a deep affection for his dad.
Between the lies: This brother loves Axios Philly so much that he may or may not have stretched the truth about the event.
- Sure, his sis could've met an eligible bachelor sidled up at the bar.
Yes, but: Instead, she got two nosy reporters asking her to regale us with tales about what dating is like these days.
- Reality check: Basically, just a bunch of temperamental A.J. Browns and noncommittal Jawnettes polluting the free-agent market.
- Every once in a while, you find a Jalen Hurts — but he's taken. And then you have some people on a Nick Sirianni-like mission of self-sabotage.
Luckily, her cousin joined us for moral support — and the first drink was on us.
- Hey, we gotta do something to convert people into Axios Philly stalwarts.
♥️ Mike and I also enjoyed the deep talk we had with another reader who shared stories about his father with the detail of a historian.
- Right now, he's digging through his pop's archive of letters, diary entries, photos and other documents, trying to piece together a memoir about his family.
The bottom line: The night reminded us of one of those beer-soaked nights in college.
- Not the ragers, but the page-turners — the nights when we're a little bit hazy but recall with crystal clarity the deep connections we made with people we're lucky to call our fans.
