Carpenters' Hall asks Pennsylvanians to help rethink the state constitution

Driving the news: Carpenters' Hall officials are polling residents on how they'd like to see the state constitution amended, including whether to explicitly enshrine reproductive rights and protections for gender identity and impose term limits on state lawmakers.

• The results will be shared during a panel discussion later this month at the Parkway Central Library, featuring constitutional scholars Bob Williams, a Rutgers professor, and Duquesne's Lauren Gailey — a milestone event marking the 250th anniversary of the state's first constitution.

What they're saying: It's fitting that a place that played such a big role in shaping our nation's democracy is now serving as "a conversation starter, a little instigator maybe" about proposed changes, Michael Norris, executive director of Carpenters' Hall, tells Axios.

The big picture: The iconic Philly building — which hosted the First Continental Congress in 1774 and attracts more than 150,000 visitors a year — has stayed standing tall, despite a blaze set there on Christmas Eve 2022.

1 fun fact: Pennsylvania's Constitution has been rewritten several times since 1776, with the current constitution dating to 1968.
