Germantown turns nation's 250th birthday into neighborhood scavenger hunt

Think geocaching meets escape room: Historic Germantown's new scavenger hunt dives deep into the neighborhood's history.

Why it matters: It's a little quest that rewards participants with stamps — and prizes — for learning about the neighborhood's pioneers.

Driving the news: The Stamp Rally launches Sept. 12 and runs through Nov. 14 as part of Historic Germantown's celebration of the nation's 250th birthday.

Zoom in: Scavengers can pick up a free Stamp Rally booklet at 23 participating locations, including Cliveden, Stenton and Historic RittenhouseTown.

They must uncover the identities of the neighborhood's trailblazers along the way (shh, they're still a secret).

What's ahead: Prizes will be handed out at a Nov. 14 wrap party at the Historic Germantown Visitor Center, including trading cards featuring the 18 trailblazing figures.

Scavengers who collect six or more stamps and scavenger-hunt answers get the trading cards, while those who snag 14 or more also score a Germantown ball cap.
Kids who collect 20 or more can enter a raffle for a swag pack filled with books and toys, while adults who hit the same milestone can win a weekend package featuring local restaurants and events.
