Philadelphia's Portal could leave unless it gets a new spot

State of play: Philly's Portal must leave its current location at the City Hall courtyard by Oct. 31, the Portals organization revealed today.

• That's when the installation's temporary permit is up.

What they're saying: Nicolas Klaus, Portals CEO, tells Axios that the group prefers to keep the Portal as a permanent landmark in Philly.

• "It belongs in Philadelphia. What we need now is for a local partner to step forward and say yes," Benediktas Gylys, founder of Portals, said in a news release.

Threat level: If a new hosting partner isn't secured, the Portals organization will relocate the 12-foot-tall installation to another city, Klaus says.

Zoom in: Any new location for Philly's Portal must be publicly accessible and representative of the city and community, among other criteria.

• Klaus suggested Independence Hall or another spot at City Hall.

Flashback: The Portal was first set up in Philly's Love Park in 2024, but was vandalized several times.

• It moved to City Hall in mid-2025.

How it works: There are six other Portal locations across the globe, including Lublin in Poland, Piauí in Brazil and Manila in the Philippines.

• The screen displays live feeds from other Portal locations on a rotating basis.
