Philly's World Cup report card: Record crowds, packed hotels and a few headaches

Yes, but: Some city bar owners told the Inquirer the Phillies and Eagles, especially when they're playing well, remain bigger draws — and bigger moneymakers — than any World Cup team that came to town.

🙌 One of the biggest winners: Local food trucks.

• They collectively made more than $2.6 million at Fan Fest, organizers said.
• Alcohol sales generated another $2.47 million.

🚇 SEPTA's ridership on the Broad Street Line saw a boost of 82% on World Cup match days in June.

• An average of nearly 25,700 passengers passed through SEPTA's NRG station outside the stadium after each World Cup match, which is 61% more than during an average Eagles game last year.

🎨 Civic pride: Philly museums and cultural institutions saw increased attendance during the tournament, including a record-setting weekend for the Museum of the American Revolution.

What they're saying: Philly put on a "world-class" showing, Philadelphia Soccer 2026's co-chair Dan Hilferty said in a statement.

Friction point: Hosting the tourney wasn't without its hiccups. Traffic and parking restrictions were a headache for many residents near the Fan Fest, some of whom complained about being erroneously ticketed or towed, Dustin Dove, president of the Fairmount Civic Association, tells Axios.

🅿️ The Philadelphia Parking Authority handed out 14,281 tickets within the city's special parking zone near the festival that included parts of Fairmount and Brewerytown.

• That's an average of roughly 366 tickets per day during the 39-day festival.

🪝 Plus: 1,023 vehicles were towed within that special zone during that time.

Yes, but: Lemon Hill neighbors generally enjoyed the perks of living so close to a massive, free event, Dove says.

• "It was definitely worth it to showcase the space and to remind everyone — visitors and people who live here — that Lemon Hill is a gem."

Reality check: A full accounting is still months away. The city hasn't yet released costs for police overtime, sanitation and other public services tied to the tournament.

The bottom line: Early returns suggest Philly delivered a strong host city performance — one officials hope will help land bigger investments and opportunities down the road.
