Dozens of Philly nightlife spots want to party until 4am during World Cup

Context: The state created a special permit for Philly that allows certain businesses to stay open two hours later for celebrations from June 11 to July 20.

By the numbers: A total of 76 businesses applied to take the city's safety training certification program — the first step toward becoming eligible for an extended hours permit, a city spokesperson tells Axios.

• 37 businesses have completed the training as of late last week, with the remainder still in the pipeline.
• The sign-up period closed last month.

Meanwhile, 51 businesses have submitted applications to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board to receive a Philadelphia 250 Permit to remain open longer each day.

• The bulk of the businesses are in Center City, Old City and along Christopher Columbus Boulevard, stretching from the Northern Liberties to Whitman neighborhoods.
• The PLCB will approve or reject permits on a rolling basis, starting May 31.

Worth noting: A handful of businesses that applied to the state agency were found ineligible for the permit.

The intrigue: Residents can seek to prevent specific shops from getting an extended-hours permit.
