Philly suburb hotel prices on the upswing during PGA Championship week

The big picture: While the area is seeing weak hotel and Airbnb demand for next month's World Cup, prices are skyrocketing for this week's PGA Championship, according to a new analysis from sports betting site VegasInsider.

How it works: The site compared more than 5,300 hotel and Airbnb prices in Newtown Square and surrounding suburbs between May 13 and 18, with average prices of 5-night stays for two adults in the weeks before and after the PGA Championship (6-11 May & 20-25 May).

By the numbers: The average 5-night stay on Booking.com fetched more than $1,800 — 73% more expensive than the week before the tournament and nearly 30% more than the week after it ends.

• Meanwhile, Airbnb booking costs were hovering around $1,653, or 61% more expensive than the week before the tournament.

Zoom in: Hotel rooms, as of Monday, ranged between $584 and $2,467 a night.

• One Airbnb listing about 14 miles from the golf course was renting for $347, per the analysis, while a three-bedroom farmhouse 3 miles from the course was listed for $3,728.
