You know what I'm talking about:

• The ones boosting our confidence — "Your long hair in high school looked awesome, Mike."
• Helping keep us honest — "If you lie, your nose will grow."
• Protecting us from life's challenges — "Our dog was sick, so we sent him to the farm upstate to live."
• Keeping us healthy — "If you eat too many doughnuts, you'll turn into one."

Then there are the questionable ones:

• "Don't walk on manhole covers because you'll fall through."
• "You have to wait 30 minutes to go in the water after you eat or you'll get a cramp."
