Mural depicting César Chávez in Philadelphia could be changed

Context: The mural — "Latinoamérica: Una Lengua, Múltiples Culturas" — is in the Fairhill neighborhood in El Centro de Oro, the center of the city's Latino community.

• Chávez is depicted among several other significant Latino cultural and historical figures in the mural at 2863 N. Fifth St., on the side of a small grocery store.

• Dolores Huerta, Chávez's longtime fellow labor leader, said she was sexually assaulted by Chávez. She also alleged she became pregnant with two of his children.
• Since the story was published, annual celebrations across the country honoring Chávez have been canceled. Officials have pushed to remove his name from streets, monuments, parks and other spaces.

What they're saying: "In light of these allegations, the depiction of César Chávez in this mural must be reconsidered in conversation with the artists and community members," a spokesperson for Mural Arts told Axios in a released statement.

• "What is painted on a wall does not stay fixed in meaning," the statement added.

What's next: The agency has reached out to the artists of the mural, community organizations and the neighborhood about the mural.

• The spokesperson added that the agency "intends to act swiftly in accordance with their wishes."
