J&J to invest $1B in new Montgomery County cell therapy plant

Johnson & Johnson is investing more than $1 billion to build a new cell therapy plant in Montgomery County.
Why it matters: The project expands the New Jersey-based pharmaceutical giant's footprint in the Philadelphia region.
Driving the news: The manufacturing plant, which will be in Lower Gwynedd Township, will employ about 500 people over the next dozen years, the company said in a news release.
- The plant will enhance J&J's ability to make cell therapy treatments, which use immune cells to treat cancer and autoimmune diseases.
Context: J&J's largest research and development campus in the U.S. is nearby in Springhouse.
- That campus in Montco is home to nearly a dozen buildings across 172 acres, employing more than 2,500 scientists, technicians and engineers.
Zoom in: Construction on the new plant is slated to begin later this year.
- The site is expected to be operational at the end of 2031.
By the numbers: The Shapiro administration has pledged $41.5 million in state support for the project.
What they're saying: "For 140 years, Johnson & Johnson has been a leading innovator in American healthcare, and we are honored to continue advancing that legacy in Pennsylvania," Joaquin Duato, J&J's CEO and chairman, said in a statement.
- Shapiro called Pennsylvania a "powerhouse for innovation and manufacturing in the life sciences" in a separate statement.
Zoom out: J&J joins pharmaceutical giants Eli Lilly & Co. and GSK, which have said they're also building facilities in the region, per the Inquirer.
