New futsal-like courts debut in Philly ahead of World Cup

Two new mini-soccer pitches are the latest long-term investment linked to next year's World Cup matches in Philly.

Why it matters: The small, futsal-like hard courts are the first of 26 planned projects to help grow the game here.

Driving the news: Philadelphia Soccer 2026, the city's host committee, will unveil a mini-pitch at the school district's Building 21 in North Philadelphia Friday afternoon.

Another court opened Thursday at Swenson Arts & Technology High School in Northeast Philly.
The mini-pitches are open to the public — part of a collaboration between the host committee, U.S. Soccer Foundation, school district and others.

Zoom in: The courts are permanent structures that will remain after the World Cup comes and goes next year.

Play will likely be limited to the daylight hours before and after school.
