Eagles survive a wacky, wild opener against Dallas

Driving the news: Quarterback Jalen Hurts finished with two rushing touchdowns and more rushing yards than star running back Saquon Barkley. His game-sealing scramble late in the fourth quarter preserved a 24-20 win.

• The Birds lucked out on Dallas' previous drive when sure-handed receiver CeeDee Lamb dropped a pass that would've put the Cowboys within striking distance of taking the lead.

State of play: Lincoln Financial Field was rollicking as the team unveiled a second Super Bowl banner during a pregame red-carpet celebration featuring owner Jeffrey Lurie and retired defensive end Brandon Graham.

• The game took a bizarre turn when Eagles star defensive lineman Jalen Carter was ejected for spitting on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott following the opening kickoff.
• A hourlong lightning delay late in the third quarter stymied the Eagles' momentum after the defense came up with a strip and fumble recovery of Dallas running back and former Eagle Miles Sanders.

Zoom in: The Eagles couldn't capitalize on the turnover, going three and out when the game resumed.

• But the Birds' defense held the Cowboys scoreless in the second half, and stiffened when they needed a big-time stop at the end of the game.

What they're saying: "It's a new team, it's a new journey," Hurts told NBC sideline reporter Melissa Stark during a postgame interview. "We gotta clean up some things, play better football."
