Declaration of Independence stars at new Philadelphia exhibit

The Declaration of Independence's ripple effects across the globe are getting the spotlight at the Museum of the American Revolution's new exhibit.

Why it matters: The special exhibition is a launchpad to Philadelphia's celebration next year for America's 250th birthday and other big-ticket events, like FIFA World Cup matches.

Driving the news: "The Declaration's Journey," opening Oct. 18, will examine how that famous document inspired national and international leaders, from Frederick Douglass to Mahatma Gandhi, and how it influenced independence movements across the globe.

Plus: Visitors can explore Americans' own shifting understanding and perception of the document over the centuries.

Zoom in: The show will feature more than 120 artifacts, including some making their public debut. Some of the items:

A chair Thomas Jefferson is believed to have used in Philly while drafting the Declaration of Independence.
A stone salvaged from the Bastille with portraits engraved on it.
A collection of Abraham Lincoln's newspaper clippings and notes.
