The Trump administration has revoked more visas from international students at Temple University while slashing the school's federal funding, university officials say.
The big picture: Federal immigration authorities have stripped visas from hundreds of international students nationwide.
- And the Trump administration has already frozen billions of dollars in federal funding for U.S. universities, including in Philly.
Driving the news: The U.S. Secretary of State has revoked the visas of "several additional current and former Temple students" over the last week, university president John Fry said in a statement Monday.
- Those students are working with their attorneys to determine next steps. Fry declined to provide additional details, citing privacy concerns.
- This comes after a single Temple student had their visa revoked earlier this month.
Meanwhile, Temple is facing a loss of roughly $3 million in federal funding from the termination of 14 grants, most of which are from the Department of Health and Human Services, Fry said.
- Plus: Fry expects the recent reduction in reimbursement rates from the Department of Energy will also hamper Temple's research efforts.
What's next: Temple will launch mandatory anti-discrimination training this week for students and staff, stemming from an agreement with federal authorities over the school's handling of reports of antisemitism and other discrimination during 2023 pro-Palestinian protests.
What to watch: More changes appear to be coming after the Department of Education called on schools to ditch certain policies — like those that promote diversity, equity and inclusion — or lose federal funding.
- Fry said university officials are working to implement changes to "several areas where adjustments are needed to processes or descriptive language," which will ensure compliance with the law.
