Volunteer to plant trees across Philly in April

Driving the news: The group will plant more than 900 trees in the Philly region during the weeklong event, which kicks off April 7.

• Volunteers can sign up to help sort and distribute trees from April 7-11 at the Philabundance Warehouse, and then to plant them April 11-14.

Volunteers are most needed in these areas:

• Philly: East Passyunk, Heritage Tree Tenders (North Philly), Manayunk, Roxborough, Wissahickon
• Suburbs: Ambler, Chester

What you need: Hand sanitizer, gloves, closed-toed shoes, and a water bottle. PHS is providing tools and supplies for planting.

By the numbers: Advocates estimate about 20% of Philadelphia is covered by trees, with tree coverage as low as 2.5% in many neighborhoods.

• 30% tree coverage is ideal, PHS says.
