The Bayou Bar & Grill is the lone Washington Commanders-friendly spot in Philadelphia β at least, according to the team.
Reality check: Good luck, D.C. fans β the Manayunk mainstay is actually a die-hard Eagles hangout.
Driving the news: The Bayou is listed on the Commanders' Rally Bar Network among a trio of other pro-Washington bars across Pennsylvania.
- The team's website bills the bars as places for transplants to find a "fun and welcoming environment to catch the big game!"
What they're saying: "It's very humorous to me that we're on that list," Paul Karcsh, the Bayou's general manager, tells Axios.
- "We're getting [fans from] a rival team from our own division saying we're a Commanders bar βΒ and that's not what we are."
How it (likely) happened: Karcsh chalks up this case of mistaken identity to the Bayou carrying NFL Ticket for years starting in the early 2000s. (The bar no longer has NFL Ticket.)
- With few bars carrying the package and airing out-of-market NFL games at the time, the Bayou developed a reputation for a spot to watch non-Eagles games.
- That likely led a Washington fan to tout the bar.
π Worth noting: Eagles fans typically don't mingle with rival fans on game days.
- Birds fans regularly watch on the ground level of the bar, while everyone else catches their games on the second floor.
Zoom in: With the Commanders enjoying a turnaround season, interest in the team is running high.
- Karcsh says he's fielded an influx of calls, especially this week, inquiring whether the bar is Washington-friendly.
For the record, Karcsh says he's never asked to be removed from the list.
What's next: Karcsh isn't expecting many Commanders jerseys at the Bayou this weekend.
- "Philadelphia fans have this image where they're very intimidating, and I think we strike fear in other teams' fans," Karcsh said. "But for me, you can root for whoever you want to."
