The Walmart Arkansas Music Pavilion plans to expand its hospitality complex for private members and events and its artists wing for performers.

Why it matters: The region's largest concert venue wants artists to have a good experience so they are more likely to return, Walmart AMP vice president Brian Crowne said in a news release.

The hospitality complex expansion will allow the venue to take more private club members after being at capacity for several years, spokesperson Jennifer Wilson told Axios in an email. Memberships start at $5,000 a year.

State of play: The 1,270-square-foot addition to the Willard and Pat Walker Family Artist Wing includes a gym for artists, crews and their families, plus a lounge for watching TV or playing games backstage. The work will include enclosing the patio that was added in 2020 and installing air-conditioning, Wilson said.

Separately, a two-story permanent hospitality complex will replace the open-air tent that has housed the Land O'Lakes Lounge since 2014. The lounge will be on the first floor, and the second floor will house an all-inclusive club with beverages, food, air-conditioning, seating and private access to a patio, according to the news release.

The venue can also rent the space for private or corporate events, Wilson said.

By the numbers: The work, totaling $7.7 million, will nearly double the hospitality complex's size, adding 6,000 square feet for a total of 12,725 square feet.

Flashback: The venue's 2020 expansion included additional dressing rooms for artists plus a green room, showers for their crews, and an expanded catering lounge.

What's next: The expansions are set to be complete in time for the 2027 concert series that starts in May.

Advocates recommend Arkansas make policy changes to expand paid leave from work after interviewing focus groups, educators and nurses from across the state.

Why it matters: The consensus was that paid leave for new parents, other family caregiving responsibilities and illness was essential for family and financial stability, according to Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families.

Expand public school parental leave to cover fathers. Only paid maternity leave is required.

Cover all foster care placements and adopted children.

Paid leave for early childhood education workers.

Paid leave for parents with children who need neonatal intensive care.

Establish leave for workers experiencing domestic or sexual violence to attend appointments such as legal proceedings or counseling.

Establish military caregiver leave for when a service member or veteran is injured, ill or has a rehabilitation need.

Between the lines: The three location-specific focus groups were in Fayetteville, Helena-West Helena in the east Arkansas Delta, and Texarkana in southwest Arkansas — cities with different demographics, cultural influences and socioeconomic factors.

The poverty rate in Helena-West Helena is about 32%, compared to about 21% in Fayetteville and 26% in Texarkana, according to the Census.

About 15% of people 25 and older have a bachelor's degree or higher in Helena-West Helena and Texarkana, compared to 49% in Fayetteville.

Zoom in: Helena-West Helena respondents described reliance on faith, family and resilience in the absence of government or employer support. They also shared postpartum depression experiences.

Texarkana respondents focused on the consequences for children whose parents don't have paid leave, like unsafe child care arrangements, hunger, neglect concerns and housing instability.

The Fayetteville group emphasized workplace concerns like human resources complexities and the importance of a supportive work environment.

Zoom out: Nurses and educators described delaying medical care and coming back to work before they were ready. "Teacher guilt," such as feeling responsible for students while on leave, was a major theme among educators.

What we're watching: A legislative session that could offer policy changes is coming up in the spring.

Apparently, the world of fast-casual, health-focused restaurants sees a market in Northwest Arkansas, because at least the third chain of its kind has landed here within three years.

🥗 State of play: Florida-based SoFresh recently opened near the Walmart Arkansas Music Pavilion in Rogers, following Crisp & Green in Bentonville and Springdale and SweetGreen on the Walmart campus and in Fayetteville. It's SoFresh's first Arkansas location, serving up salads and bowls.

🤷‍♀️ Yes, but: To be fair, there is a market. I love knowing where the nearest place to grab a salad with substance is for days when planning or cooking got away from me but I don't want to resort to fried fast food.

🥑 What I ate: I tried an almost superfoods bowl — I call it that because I swapped walnuts for sunflower seeds, but it was otherwise the standard bowl with quinoa, brown rice, avocado, walnuts, roasted broccoli, tomatoes and balsamic vinaigrette topped with blackened salmon.

The protein does not automatically come with the bowl, but salmon was the recommended add-on.

This was a really satisfying meal that didn't feel "fast," but I got it fast. And it was packed with nutrition and flavor.

🍄‍🟫 Zoom out: I also tried my fellow diner's Bangkok bowl with shredded kale, Asian garlic noodles, teriyaki, mushrooms, red onions and toasted almonds topped with citrus chicken thigh.

Sweet teriyaki with citrus, umami and garlic is a staple mashup for a reason and done nicely here. You also don't often see noodles as an option at similar restaurants.

💰 By the numbers: Prices are variable because bowls typically come without protein but most of us would add it. The total bill for both bowls and a drink was about $43 after tax and tip.

📍 Stop by: 10:30am-9pm Monday through Friday and 10:30am-8pm Saturday and Sunday at 5505 W. Northgate Road, Suite 106 in Rogers.

NorthWest Arkansas Community College is making headway on the recreational amenities in its master plan that was approved last year, with some of the first projects coming to campus.

Why it matters: The long-term plan stands to significantly increase offerings and amenities at the region's growing flagship community college, which also offers non-degree programs geared toward filling needed jobs in the area.

The latest: The school completed a fitness center in fall 2025 and plans to open outdoor lighted pickleball courts and multipurpose courts for basketball, volleyball and tennis in June, president Dennis Rittle told Axios.

The $800,000 project, which includes trails, is funded by a $680,000 state grant and $120,000 from NWACC.

The college is also pursuing a roughly $10 million walking and cycling trail project, including a tunnel underneath 14th Street. U.S. Rep. Steve Womack has requested $4.5 million in federal funding for construction.

Yes, but: Progress hit a snag in June when the Board of Trustees didn't approve issuing a request required to move forward with construction on a $35 million residence hall to house 300–400 students.

The board previously approved the housing concept, location and funding model.

What they're saying: NWACC plans to be debt-free by 2035. Rittle hopes the board will be more willing to approve housing construction next year as the school is paying down debt faster than required.

Zoom out: NWACC is ramping up its athletic offerings. The men's and women's intercollegiate soccer teams are in their first season, and NWACC plans to start intercollegiate baseball in spring 2028 and intercollegiate softball in 2029, athletic director Brooke Brewer told Axios.

The college launched intercollegiate athletics just a few years ago with men's and women's cross-country and track and field and co-ed esports.

The master plan does not include fields for baseball and softball. The school plans to work out an agreement with an off-campus facility, Brewer said.

Reality check: The master plan includes lofty projects like an estimated $80 million complex with a ballroom and student center. A day care, theater and academic space are also in the plan. The college is still working to get funding and update infrastructure, including a roundabout off Water Tower Road, for that construction.

NWACC also wants to avoid raising tuition and fees to cover the costs of the expansion and is seeking philanthropic opportunities. It is seeing more tuition money as a result of higher enrollment, though.

What's next: A recently formed nonprofit booster club will begin raising money to develop a field and stadium for soccer, track and field and cross-country, Rittle said.

Education

It's the last day to make your voice heard, with local, state and federal offices up for grabs.

Why it matters: The results will determine who represents Northwest Arkansas in state and local government and will help decide which party controls Congress.

State of play: Polls are open from 7:30am to 7:30pm Tuesday. You must be in line by 7:30pm to vote. A state or federal government-issued photo ID is required, but you can still cast a provisional ballot if you forget your ID.

You'll have to return with your ID to your county's board of election commissioners or county clerk by noon Monday for it to be certified and counted.

Find your polling places and learn more about voting rights.

By the numbers: As of the end of the day Saturday, 542,900 Arkansans had voted early, Secretary of State's Office spokesperson Samantha Boyd told Axios.

That's about 30% of the state's more than 1.84 million registered voters. Arkansas is seeing a higher early voting turnout. In 2022, about 25% of the state's registered voters had voted by the Saturday before Election Day, with 457,271 ballots cast of about 1.8 million registered voters.

NWA is on par with the rest of the state, with about 30% of registered voters in Benton and Washington counties having already voted as of Saturday, according to the counties' election commissions.

Washington County reported 46,899 ballots cast out of 154,292 registered voters. About 24% of registered voters cast ballots during the same time period in 2022.

Benton County reported 62,960 ballots cast out of 204,425 registered voters. About 27% of registered voters cast ballots during the same time period in 2022.

The big picture: Democrats are pulling for representation in Arkansas' federal delegation, with eyes on the Senate race as Democrat Hallie Shoffner seeks to unseat Republican Sen. Tom Cotton and Democrat Chris Jones competes for Republican Rep. French Hill's seat to represent the 2nd Congressional District in central Arkansas.

The push comes as Republicans nationwide try to keep their majority in both the Senate and House.

Zoom in: Nine state House of Representatives seats in NWA will be decided, and the winners will help shape new state laws during the spring legislative session.

No matter who's elected, Washington County is getting a new chief executive officer as Democrat Dana Deree and Republican Tim Shepard compete for county judge.

Washington County also has nine contested justice of the peace seats. Benton County has seven contested seats.

Rogers has a major six-question bond issue on the ballot that will decide whether a number of projects — including $195 million in street work, a new training center for the Fire Department and a new animal shelter — go forward. Siloam Springs residents will decide on a 0.625% sales tax to pay for $55 million in wastewater improvements that city leaders say are necessary.

Several of NWA's small towns have mayoral elections and ballot issues, including Sunday alcohol sales.

Zoom out: Arkansas also has four statewide ballot issues and several statewide races, including whether to reelect Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who is challenged by Democrat state Sen. Fred Love and Libertarian Colt Shelby.

The bottom line: Not voting is allowing others to make decisions for you.

Check out our voter guide and see your sample ballot before going to the polls.
