Monday Munchies: 1834 Tavern Lafayette

Fayetteville's new(ish) fine dining and date-nighting spot 1834 Tavern Lafayette offers Belgian-inspired cuisine.
- The menu is focused on a few items but still manages to bridge gaps between varying appetites.
- Alex previously reviewed some of that Belgian fare, but I went back specifically for a steak.
Dig in: The 7-ounce, aged filet with pommes purée (mashed potatoes) and asparagus ($59) caught my eye, while my date went for the Flemish beer-battered cod and frites ($33) — fish and chips.
- The 11-ounce American Wagyu New York strip ($63) looks mighty tasty for the next visit.
The verdict: A good steak should be a simple layup for any place with a decent grill and good meat. It certainly was for 1834's staff.
- Well seasoned, tender and actually cooked medium-rare as ordered, it was an excellent meal. The potatoes were silky, buttery and delicious.
- My friend had eaten the cod once before. It was flaky and well-battered, but the star was by far the french fries (supposedly invented in Belgium, the hostess pointed out).
- "I've dreamed of these fries since the last time I was here," she said.
The bottom line: Equipped with a fine-looking bar, this "tavern" belongs on anyone's steak night rotation.
