Every now and then, I stumble across a restaurant I haven't heard much buzz about and get legitimately upset I've missed out this whole time.
🇵🇷 🇸🇻 State of play: That's what happened at Betel, a place in an unassuming strip mall just to the east of Interstate 49 in Springdale serving a straightforward menu of Puerto Rican and Salvadoran staples.
🥩 What to try: The flank steak with the mofongo ($14) was fantastic. Mofongo is a Puerto Rican dish with smashed plantains, and Betel's tasted especially buttery. The accompanying steak must have been really well marinated because it was bursting with flavor and wasn't tough, as flank steak can be.
- You're just as well off to order the Arroz Gandules, a rice dish with pigeon peas, with fried chicken ($13). It comes with a few fried plantains and a side of macaroni salad.
💰 By the numbers: Dinner for two here totaled $40, including a non-alcoholic drink, tax and tip. As expensive as it's getting to go out to eat, it was a treat to go somewhere and get seriously good food for what it used to cost.
