Check your smoke detector

Driving the news: The division says 28 people in Arkansas have died from fires so far this year, slightly up from 27 by this time last year.

Zoom in: Half of the deaths were people ages 60 and older, and five were people under 20 years old. One of the deaths was in Benton County, and none were in Washington County, spokesperson Ashley Luningham told Axios.

The division recommends:

• Installing smoke detectors on every level of a home, especially inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas.
• Testing smoke detectors monthly.
• Replacing smoke detector batteries at least twice a year, when you change your clocks, or immediately when the low battery warning sounds.
• Replacing smoke detectors every 10 years or according to manufacturer recommendations.
• Knowing at least two ways out of every room ahead of time and practicing fire escape plans twice a year.
