Fayetteville residents may be in a better mood than usual this Earth Day, because the city will start delivering new recycling carts in mid-May ahead of a June 1 launch of its single-stream program.
Why it matters: The change should make recycling easier for households, safer for workers and more effective at keeping waste out of the landfill, the city says.
State of play: The new program replaces Fayetteville's current curb-sort system, which uses two 18-gallon bins. Residents will now put most accepted recyclables — including cans, cardboard, paper and plastic bottles — into a single blue cart.
Yes, but: Glass will still be collected separately every other week, and households are encouraged to keep their current green bins.
What to know: Customers who didn't choose between a 95-, 65- or 35-gallon cart by April 17 will receive a 65-gallon cart.
The backstory: A multi-year rate study found the current system was less convenient and scalable, helping explain a low recycling rate.
