First look: Crystal Bridges announces gifts, expansion opening

Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art will open its major expansion June 6, 2026, and celebrate the largest gift of works to the permanent collection since its founding, the museum shared with Axios.
Why it matters: The world-class museum serves as a cultural anchor and economic catalyst for Arkansas and beyond.
The big picture: Candace and Michael Humphreys of Dallas gave 200 works by more than 100 artists — including Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Mapplethorpe, Judy Kensley McKie, Laura McPhee and Andy Warhol — plus funding for future acquisitions.
- Michael Humphreys is a retired venture capitalist, and Candace Humphreys is an adviser to the Collections Committee at the Museum of Fine Arts of Boston.
Olivia Walton, the museum's board chair, and Tom Walton gave 18 works exclusively by women artists, expanding on themes of femininity and selfhood.
What they're saying: The gifts build on art from other donors and broaden the museum's ability to tell more stories about America, Rod Bigelow, the museum's executive director, told Axios.
- "We want to be that place where people come to learn about American history and learn about us as individuals and as communities," he said.
State of play: The gifts coincide with the opening of the museum's expanded space, and many will be featured throughout its galleries.
- Nearly every gallery will be reinstalled, and there will be an "all-new core experience that takes visitors on a thematic journey through American life, landscape, and spirit," according to a Monday news release.
"This is a manifestation of a 50-year plan," Bigelow said. "It gives us an opportunity to create more access sooner than later."
Flashback: Crystal Bridges in 2021 announced it would add about 100,000 square feet to the existing 200,000 square feet.
The intrigue: It opened Nov. 11, 2011, and will reopen its expanded space on June 6, 2026 — dates with repeating numerals and historical references to D-Day and Veterans Day.
What we're watching: Bigelow's favorite work from the Humphreys is "Tom's Carousel," an interactive, full-size carousel sculpture with seven bronze figures by Tom Otterness.
- "When I visited the Humphreys, I actually jumped on the carousel myself!" Bigelow said.
