Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders appeared Monday evening on Fox News' "Jesse Watters Primetime" to talk about President Trump's deployment of National Guard troops in Washington, D.C., to fight crime.
- This week, Trump indicated other cities could be next.
What she said: "I think that Democratic mayors and governors need to be thanking [Trump] and begging him to come to their cities and help them out because clearly they're not capable of doing the job, and they need a president that will step in," Sanders said.
Watters asked whether Arkansas had crime problems and whether Sanders would invite the National Guard to help.
- "We're always going to invite Donald Trump and safety and security into our state," she said.
- "We have expanded prison capacity, putting … more law enforcement officers on our streets in the last two years — it's been one of the biggest focuses of our state, and will continue to be, and we will always work with Trump to make sure our communities and our state are safer."
Axios asked last week whether Sanders would send Arkansas National Guard troops to Washington, as other states have.
- Sanders spokesperson Sam Dubke responded: "Governor Sanders stands with President Trump and supports his work to fight crime and clean up our nation's capital."
Reality check: Crime in Washington hit a 30-year low in 2024, according to a Justice Department statement in January — down 35% from the city's 2023 crime wave.
The intrigue: Neither Watters nor Sanders mentioned the false reports of an active shooter at the University of Arkansas earlier that same day.
