Arkansas launches mobile ID option

Between the lines: Arkansas Mobile ID will allow users to share only the personal data they want to share from their credentials.

• For example, when making an age-restricted purchase, the buyer can prove their age without disclosing a home address.

State of play: The app is "highly secure," the Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) said in a news release Monday and can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play by searching "AR Mobile ID."

• It can be used as a valid form of ID at participating businesses and venues, but there are few of those as of now.

What they're saying: "We've been in touch with alcohol permit holders and other businesses that require identity verification," Scott Hardin, spokesperson for DFA said in an email.

• "There will be businesses that accept it now. However, we think it will take a few months before it is widely accepted."

The bottom line: The state is working with the Transportation Security Administration and expects people will be able to use Arkansas Mobile ID to board a flight sometime this summer, Hardin said.
